Saturday, March 10th 2-6 PM Shaabi Choreography:
Egyptian Shaabi music and dance (commonly understood as Egyptian Street Dance) are rapidly gaining popularity with belly dancers across the globe. Understanding the cheeky & witty lyrics, the playful movement and most importantly, the cultural gestures is crucial to capturing the look, feel and credibility of this aspect of Egyptian style belly dance. In this amusing and adorable new piece, Shahin will break down every element and present an easy to follow choreography giving dancers a deeper and more authentic understanding of this evolving aspect of the Raqs Sharqi.

Sunday, March 11th 2-6 PM Oriental Raqs Sharqi Choreography:
Shahin will present a rich and elegant modern style of Raqs Sharqi in a classical Oriental Raqs Sharqi choreography. 3-hour Intensive Workshops with Katayoun
Sponsored by Mosaique
Lady of America, Reston, VA
Each workshop is $45, or $70 for both

Persian Dance Intensive
Sunday, March 18 - 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

This workshop will focus on classical Persian dance and popular social dances, primarily, Baba Karam.  Learn the secrets to capturing the unique Persian aesthetic as we explore the distinct flavors and variations of Persian dance steps.  More than just arm and hand movements, learn how the details of body alignment, musical interpretation and flow of energy, transform simple movements to poetry in motion.  While suitable for mixed-level abilities, this class will be strenuous and is not recommended for beginner dancers.  Pre-requisite: minimum 6 months progressive dance training, or instructor permission.  Wear ballet slippers.  Bring pen/paper for notes, water and small snacks.

Props Intensive: Veil and Cane

Sunday, March 25 - 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Learn to use each prop and how to work both into a performance set.  Learn to choose appropriate music and perform with proper technique.  We will explore storytelling and cultural context, and how these concepts inspire a unique approach to artistry and costuming when dancing with these popular props.  As time and student ability allow, we will practice using multiples of our props: ie. double-veil and double-cane.  While suitable for mixed-level abilities, this class will move quickly and is not recommended for beginner dancers.  Pre-requisite: basic skills using each prop with desire to expand and improve upon; AND 6 months progressive dance training, or instructor permission.  Wear dance shoes.  Bring one to three veils, one to two canes, water, and a small snack.

Journey through Egypt (JtE) is a structured series of intensive workshops, providing an in-depth look at the various dance zones of Egypt.  Each "intensive" views Egypt's Folkloric dance from a different perspective.  JtE-1 and JtE-2 are held in studios, classrooms and reception halls worldwide.

JtE-1 (Intensive/Certification 20-hr Workshop) draws upon films, lecture, study materials, map, and dance instruction.  JtE-1 introduces the students to the wide variety of danced styles in Egypt with an overview of movement, costume, historical diffusion, and geographical location.

JtE-2 (Intensive/Certification 20-hr Workshop) provides an advanced overview, including the basis for future research, student specialization, dance ethnology concepts.  Students investigate the dance differences between "home-style," local professional dance, regional government troupes, Cairo-based Reda and Kowmeyya national troupes, and folkloric representation in night club shows.

Using dance ethnology concepts and a multi-media/experiential approach, Sahra C. Kent presents each region's story of culture and dance, historical diffusion, costume and dress, posture and movement.

All inten
sive include a certificate upon completion.  Certification is awarded to only those who complete all 20 hours of each course (40 hours total).

Save the Date: March 28 - April 1, 2012
